Valentina Cubi, vignaiolo in Veneto

At the beginning of 20th century Giuseppe Vasson marries Vittoria Fedrigo, who brings a winery and vineyards, called Azienda Fedrigo, located in the village of Negrar in the middle of Valpolicella, into the marriage. Vason, himself a scion of a family renown for the production of its Recioto della Valpolicella, started to run the estate, which, after his death, was continued by his son Albano Vason. But Albano never got the time to develop the estate further. The Second World War took his life while devastating the region’s economy.
Because Albano’s children were too young to take over, the estate was sold. But it was not to be the end of the Vasson Family’s winemaking history. As soon as Giancarlo, Albano’s son, had finished his oenology studies at the renowned Scuola Enologica in Conegliano, he immediately started searching for an estate to resurrect the lost Azienda Fedrigo. In 1969 he found a cellar complete with 10 hectares of vines in the hills of Valpolicella, near the village of Fumane.
Giancarlo immediately began modernising the estate. One of the first things he did was to pull out any white varieties, which, as was the custom in those days, ended up with the red grapes in the fermentation vat He also replaced the very large pergola training systems, which favour large volume production, with the guyot trellis system, a drastically reducing yields. But he did keep the old vine pergolas, which now form the backbone of the Valentina Cubi wines.
At first, the grapes and wine produced were sold on, until Giancarlo’s wife, Valentina Cubi, after her retirement as a primary school teacher, got involved. She was convinced that they ought to bottle the wines under their own name instead of selling it in bulk. She knew from Giancarlo that the vineyards where in the middle of important crus, notably Monte Tenda, Monte Crosetta and Rasso in the very middle of the Classico hills, and she was keen to see the unique terroir reflected the wines. It was also she who instigated the estate’s organic conversion.
